VGK Win Marks Biggest Payout in NHL History
Vegas is officially title town. On Tuesday night, the Vegas Golden Knights hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup after winning the NHL Finals. In doing so, they made good on owner Bill Foley’s “Cup in Six” proclamation. The 9-3 Vegas win was not only huge for the city, but also for bettors, as they cashed in on game bets, series bets, futures bets, and probably even alphabets.
With everything combined, it’s believed to be the highest NHL payout in the sports gaming industry and STN. With all that in mind, let’s quickly look back at the past week in sports and peek at what’s ahead on the STN Sports App and at the Station Casinos Race and Sports Books…
Quest For The Cup
The betting public was all in on the Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final — the Florida Panthers backing was more absent than an NFL player in a contact holdout. “There’s no surprise. It’s overwhelming one-sided action in favor of the Knights,” said Chuck Esposito, Station Casinos’ Race and Sports Book Director. Although the STN Sports Book has offered a bevy of props, there wasn’t really one getting more love than another. “The puck line isn’t really a prop bet, but that’s been a really popular bet.”
In addition, Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson and Chandler Stevenson were all popular bets to score the first goal of Game 5 (It ended up being Mr. Hat Trick Mark Stone.) Despite the liability the Book had on the Knights, it was hoping for a hometown win… a very specific win though. Prior to puck drop, Esposito said, “If the Knights win, having them win by one and stay under 5.5 goals would be best case scenario for us.” So much for that. Go Knights Go!
Like those two aliens behind the forklift in the Vegas backyard, we’ve never seen anything like this. “The handle you’re seeing on these Knights games resembles what you would see not only on a pro football game, but probably a pro football playoff game,” Esposito said in discussing the action on this NHL Final. The handle is amplified because of local bias and the Knights winning ways. “If this was even say Chicago against Boston or two original six popular teams, you would still generate a tremendous handle,” Esposito said, “but it would pale in comparison to what we’ve seen throughout the series because it’s VGK.”
Although this is believed to be the highest NHL payout in the history of STN and the sports gaming industry, some of those bets might not ever be cashed. “In the inaugural season you saw people buying $2 and $5 future book tickets on the Knights that were really more of a souvenir, and you saw people buying a lot of small tickets on Tuesday as a souvenir as well,” Esposito said.
NBA Champs Crowned
All season long the Denver Nuggets were slept on more than a Red Rock Rouge Pool lounge chair. The Lakers got a lot of publicity… so did Boston and Philly and Golden State. Denver, though, wasn’t given the love that other teams got at the ticket window or on national TV. The Jokic’s on them. On Monday, the Nuggets were crowned World Champions, and Nikola Jokic was named MVP of the series — the vote was more unanimous than the Nevada Senate’s decision on the A’s funding bill.
“Denver was a really good outcome for us,” Esposito said. “There was considerable Heat money line play on Monday. There was a lot of Heat love on the series price, money line, and future price.” As Jokic was the odds-on MVP favorite by a fairly wide margin, his win hardly dented the STN wallet. “As we look at hockey and the liability there, the NBA side of things really worked out our way,” Esposito said. Granted, Denver was good all year (hello, No. 1 seed in the West) and they got action, but they weren’t as popular a bet as other squads. Professional bettors, though, seemed to be in on Denver from the get-go, Esposito said.
In the moments following the NBA Finals, odds for the 2023-2024 season were listed, and oddsmakers feel that Denver has a great shot at going back-to-back. The Celtics, Nuggets, and Bucks – in that order – have been established as the odds-on favorites. On the other end of the list sit the Hornets and Pistons, who have odds longer than a Las Vegas road project. “There’s definitely going to be some movement after free agency and trades,” Esposito said. “A lot is contingent on what happens with those.”
UFC Weekend
How many GOATS can we lose? On Saturday night, Amanda Nunes, one of UFC’s biggest names, had a dominant win against Irene Aldana and then called it a career. She’s following in the footsteps of fellow retired legends Tom Brady, Serena Williams, and, okay, Pat Sajak. Nunes was special to the UFC and to bettors. A favorite in nearly all her matches, Nunes delivered for bettors time and time again.
“We had a good handle with UFC,” Esposito said. “With UFC, a lot of is contingent on how the rest of the card goes with parlays and stuff rolling over to the main event. Anytime you have somebody as popular as Nunes in the main event it just adds to the overall card, handle, and the atmosphere, but there’s no guarantee to say that liability’s going to be low.”
A’s Days
Break up the A’s! The soon-to-be Las Vegas A’s, the doormat of baseball, are on a roll and they have quite the distinction. Following Tuesday’s win, they had won 7 in a row (best in the MLB) and yet still have the worst record in the league. The A’s are harder to understand than some of those Ted Lasso characters.
Weekly Winners
Let’s face it. This week, it’s Vegas locals in general. The book got beaten every which way with VGK’s success in winning the Cup. Congrats to the public – the excitement and fun this team generates for the city is all worth it!
Bets To Know
Another major tournament is here, and we’re just going to have to LIV with it. The US Open comes just one week after the PGA shockingly merged with LIV Golf, and a LIV golfer is actually leading the ticket count for the US Open. Brooks Koepka (a 9-to-1 favorite) is leading the charge, followed by Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler. Look for matchups and other props to bet throughout the weekend.
