Guests Net Win On Wimbledon, Women’s World Cup Kicks Off
The STN Sports Books might just be the coolest place to watch a game. They’re insanely fun, they have working air conditioners and they have no problem dishing out cold, hard cash. What more could you ask for in these scalding heat wave!
With all that in mind, let’s quickly look back at the past week in sports and peek at what’s ahead on the STN Sports App and at the Station Casinos Race and Sports Books…
Wimbledon Final
The grass wasn’t always greener for the STN Sports Books when it came to the Men’s Wimbledon Finals. Guests actually did rather well with Carlos Alcaraz’s upset victory over perennial favorite Novak Djokovic at The All England Lawn Tennis Ground on Sunday.
“As far as the futures, we did really well on the actual event itself, but we did see a lot of Alcaraz money come in on the final,” said Chuck Esposito, Station Casinos’ Race and Sports Book Director. The match lasted nearly five hours and had more drama than a Miranda Lambert concert. Heck, there was a 27-minute game during the third set (in 1881, an entire finals match lasted 36 minutes.) “Just like with anything at some point, it’s tough to be the champ every single year. Somebody’s going to eventually come along,” Esposito said. “There’s a reason Alcaraz is ranked No. 1. If you’re a tennis fan or not, that was fun to watch.”
Acing the Test (Again)
Like a Tupac Shakur investigation, teams can’t seem to solve the Las Vegas Aces. The Aces not only hold the best record in the WNBA, but their games also see the most action from bettors when compared to other teams — and it’s not particularly close. Last year’s championship-winning Aces squad set a record for its season-long handle, but this year’s group of women is on track to topple that.
“There’s definitely an uptick from last year. We saw the trend and the arrow pointing upward over the last few years with the Aces,” Esposito said. Due to the popularity of the team, Aces prop bets are available almost every game, something that hasn’t exactly been the case for WNBA teams in the past. The Aces are setting a new standard for WNBA betting.
“They’re defending champs; they’re off to a red-hot start; the All-Star game was here. I think that’s all just added to guests’ awareness of the Aces,” Esposito cited. Because of the Aces record and the public’s insatiable appetite for betting them, the betting lines involving Aces games are generally inflated, but A’ja Wilson’s squad continues to have a winning against-the-spread record. Even Maverick on Top Gun can’t compete with these Aces.
NBA Summer League
A riddle: What does Thomas & Mack and a Flamingo Road pothole have in common? They haven’t been filled since the 90s! In terms of the T&M, that changed this past week as the NBA Summer League again returned to Las Vegas with some highly-touted rookies.
“The Summer League continues to grow out here. You can tell by the size of the crowds, the wagering activity and how tough it is to get a ticket,” Esposito said. The timing of the NBA showcase couldn’t come at a better time either, as it was during the MLB All-Star break, meaning it was really one of the only things to wager on. Still, the Summer League is hard to handicap, as many top players only play a few games before getting shut down. “Underdogs were definitely live,” Esposito said. “We saw a lot of parity, but the overall betting was phenomenal.”
Over the course of the 10-day tournament, bettors tended to side with teams with recent lottery picks, so the Spurs, Thunder and Hornets were all popular bets. That thinking might have been more misguided than a North Korean missile. In the end, the Cleveland Cavaliers came out on top. Over the past week and a half, Thomas & Mack saw more buckets than a casino with a leaky roof.
Bets To Know
Like a World Series of Poker champion, bettors are all in on the United States winning its third straight Women’s World Cup. Canada and England are also receiving some love from guests, but nothing like the United States. Since the games are being played halfway across the world in Australia and New Zealand, start times of the matches won’t always be ideal for Las Vegas locals. But, that’s where the STN App comes into play. Like Ricky Martin’s marriage, the app is open! Not only can guests wager on matches, they can bet on group stage winners, first half results or a country’s top scorer.
